What the ratings mean
Food hygiene ratings run from 0 to 5. Higher is better. The score is based on the last inspection carried out by the local authority.
Very good
Strong food hygiene standards with little or no action needed.
Good
Good standards overall, with only minor improvements noted.
Generally satisfactory
Acceptable, but there is room to tighten up how food safety is managed.
Improvement necessary
Important hygiene issues were found and changes are needed.
Major improvement necessary
Significant problems were identified at the last inspection.
Urgent improvement necessary
Serious food safety concerns were found and urgent action is required.
What the scores mean
Hygiene
How food is handled, prepared, cooked, cooled and stored.
Structural
The condition of the building, layout, cleanliness and pest control measures.
Confidence
How much trust inspectors have in the business to manage food safety day to day.
Lower inspection sub-scores are better. A 0 is excellent.
When was the last inspection?
The date matters because ratings can become stale. A place with a great score from years ago may not reflect current standards, and a business with a low score may already have improved since its last visit.
Always read the inspection date alongside the rating, especially if you're deciding where to eat right now.
